Use a planner to schedule your organizing.

ADHD-Friendly Organizing Tip #1...Schedule the Time...

Just like with decluttering, someone with ADHD needs to schedule the time to get organized. Whether it’s fifteen minutes or a few hours (with lots of breaks in between), make an appointment with yourself to get it done!

ADHD-Friendly Organizing Tip #2...Get a friend to help...

Having a friend there will help you stay focused on task and give you encouragement. They may even have some ideas of their own.

Organizing Tip #3...Pick One Area to work on...

Don’t try and do the whole house at once because that will be too overwhelming. Pick one room, one closet or one drawer and organize it to the best of your ability in the time you have allotted. To be ADHD-friendly, think “done is better than perfect”. You can tweak things later as you see what organizing system works for you.

ADHD-Friendly Organizing...Make it easy...like the Clutterbug...

One of my favorite professional organizers and authors is Cassandra Aarssen. She came up with a very unique way of categorizing the different styles of organizing that different people have by sorting them into four different “clutterbugs”. Having ADHD herself and figuring out what worked for her, has made it so much easier to help other people. If you want to take her quiz to find out what kind of Clutterbug you are you can find it on the link below.

Macro Organizing versus Micro-Organizing...

Looking at the big picture and macro organizing will probably be the easiest for people with ADHD. More detailed organizing when you are just starting to get organized may be too overwhelming and time consuming. Use bins or containers to sort broad items like “Medicine”. Don’t worry about making sub-categories like “pain relievers” or “digestive medications” unless you have the time and patience to develop the habit of putting things away perfectly. Remember “done is better than perfect.”

Use ADHD-Friendly Labels...

Put labels on all of your bins so you won’t even have to think about what goes where. You might also want to use clear bins so you can see what is inside.
