Do you have a shed in need of a makeover? My shed was long overdue for some repairs and a facelift. It was a dilapidated, ugly brown eyesore with worn shingles, some rotten wood and damaged doors. Wanting to keep it budget-friendly, the repairs were done over time, some salvaged materials were used and a lot of DIY.

Prioritize Shed Makeover Repairs...

Last year I had the shingles replaced and some of the rotten wood patched. All the rotten lower edges and soffit were replaced with pieces of plywood that had been salvaged form another building project. A small tree on the west side was growing too close to the west side wall so that had to be cut down, as well as some small trees and branches on the back side.

Find Inspiration for Your Makeover...

I found this cute shed while out on a day trip last year. The barn-style door with black hinges, latch and handle caught my eye.

Fixing and Making Over Shed Doors...

Unfortunately fixing the shed doors and transforming them to look more like the inspiration shed, wasn’t so simple. I believe that when the shed was originally built, the doors were put on first and then the board and batten over the hinges. Getting my sons to come and help with doing the things I couldn’t do myself required a lot of patience. But they finally got done.

Shed Paint Transformation...After

First, the fascia and soffit were painted with some white paint I already had. Then the walls were painted with a dark grey paint I had matched to the siding I was going to use on the house. Unfortunately, Canadian Tire was out of the flat paint, so I had to get the satin finish. Since I had to wait to get the doors done, I painted as much as I could and then waited…And waited…The weather started getting colder and since the exterior painting had to be done when it was above 10 degrees, I started painting the doors before they were finished.

Getting the new hardware put on...

As I already mentioned, the original hinges were mounted between the inner and outer walls. Since this was supposed to be a budget makeover, I decided to leave the original hinges and just put the new ones on for “decoration”. (By the time this was done, it was past the deadline to return them anyway.) Note to self – “Don’t buy any supplies unless ready to use them in the near future, even if they’re on sale.” The latches are actually gate latches, but I can still put locks on them if I want to.
