Do you like to spend time on your back deck? I hate to admit it, but I spent very little time on my back deck because…well… it wasn’t very inviting. It’s been a long time coming, but the time for my back deck makeover is finally here.  I was inspired by my next door neighbors when they rebuilt their deck and got a pool the year before last. If you have a lot of money (and/or time), you may be able to get things done fairly quickly. Unfortunately, there have been other home improvement priorities, so my back  deck had to wait.

Summer 2016

A few years ago I purchased an outdoor area rug, patio table and chairs. I also repainted the existing deck and rails, but that didn’t last. Between rotting boards and peeling paint it was past time they were replaced.  You can see that process in Back Deck Makeover Part One – Repair & Resurrection.

Back deck makeover updates until now...

Unfortunately, the ravages of time weren’t so nice to the  the barbecue or the awning either. After much consideration and shopping around, I finally decided on their replacements. The barbeque I found in 2019 at RONA was for a propane tank so I needed to get a gas conversion kit for it. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find the right conversion kit until the next year, and of all places – I finally found it at The Brick! (I don’t believe they still carry it.) This year I had to replace the bottom grease tray and drip pan and heatshields which I got from Amazon.

The manual crank awning by ALEKO was from Wayfair.ca. in 2020. The valance only lasted three years.😞…So I replaced it again, with one I made myself, and will be removing it for the winter.

Step One...Cleaning...

Before I got my area rug and other items out, I put my pressure washer to good use. Most of the dirt and stains on the floor disappeared. The barbecue and cover also got a good cleaning. I took my razor blade to the little paint overspray spots on the glass table and it looks almost like new.

Back deck decor...

Keeping things as simple as possible, I’ve kept the “decor” to a minimum. (Which has also helped with the budget.) I was thrilled to bring out the striped area rug again for the first time in years. (Meisha likes it too.) On the table is a battery-operated lantern, turquoise round placemat and a citronella candle from the dollar store. I repurposed a small white accent table for a vase with fake flowers, and a multi-herb planter. The only new decor I bought were six blue and white daisy and stripe cushions for under forty dollars at seventy-five percent off. They are actually comfortable, but I will be removing them when it rains.

Back deck makeover plants...

The back deck gets full sun most of the day and gets very hot in the summer. I’ve had the most luck with the more hardy petunias and marigolds. The marigolds are also a deterrent for mosquitos. Finally, I replanted some flowers in a hanging basket.

This year, you can be sure I will be having lots of barbecues again and enjoying my new space.

How are you preparing your back deck or outside area for summer this year?
