Car Organization – Assessing Your Needs

Whatever your circumstances, your car organization needs to reflect your lifestyle needs. For many people their car is an extension of their homes. As life goes, things change, so you need to continually reassess what you need. Meisha, a little Maltese terrier & chitzo recently came to live with me.

Assessing your car organization needs...What is your lifestlye?

  • Are you single or do you have a family?
  • Do you work outside the home, have your own business, or work from home?
  • Are you required to transport any tools, equipment or paperwork?
  • Do you commute to work or school?
  • How often do you attend sports, fitness events for yourself or with your kids? Is there special equipment you need to take? (A gym bag?) What about camp chairs?
  • Do you travel much for leisure?
  • How often do you eat out or “on-the-run”?

Has anything changed in your life?

  • Do you have a new baby in your family?
  • Have you recently retired?
  • Do you do volunteer work now?
  • Are you an empty nester now?
  • Have grandkids or a pet come into your life?

What do you need to be prepared in an emergency?

For Christmas last year I received this battery pack, booster cables and air compressor in one. This would be ideal to take for a trip to a remote area where there may not be another vehicle to help in an emergency. Most of my driving is local though and I have a CAA roadside assistance membership. I also have a set of booster cables and a small air compressor that I have used for a flat tire on my trailer.

When assessing your needs in your vehicle, consider all the little things that will make your journey more comfortable. Here are a few things I like to have.

  • tissues and napkins
  • dental floss
  • nail clippers
  • mini-hairbrush
  • lip balm
  • mini-first aid kit
  • sun glasses and cloth for cleaning them
  • reusable fork, spoon, knife, etc.
  • phone charger plug and cord
  • notebook and pen
  • extra shopping bags
  • wet wipes and/or a bottle of water for cleaning

Although I have a bottle of drinking water for emergencies, I also take a bottle of water wherever I go. Some people take snacks with them too. What do you like to have with you in your car?
