A few years ago, I had an office built-in made with IKEA cabinets and custom shelves, in the alcove beside my fireplace. The other side already had a built-in for CDs and DVDs so that was designated the “entertainment side.” It had to look nice but ultimately it had to be functional. It had to store books and supplies and also be easily accessible for the items that I used most often.

Semi-custom IKEA office built-ins were created...

Two IKEA SEKTION kitchen cabinets were used for the base units for the office built-in, and the upper shelves were made to match the existing built-ins on the other side. For these shelves I wanted them to be adjustable though, so I could rearrange them, if needed.

Shaker-style trim was added to the cabinet doors and drawers, which I also had done to the built-in on the other side. I painted the cabinet, drawers and shelves and then re-purposed the cap handles and knobs from my old kitchen.

Built-in office drawers

Built-in Cabinet #1...

The office supplies are stored in the first cabinet with the two doors and three pullout drawers.

Paper drawer & aqua bins for labels
Top Drawer - Paper - All kinds, Masking & Duct Tape, Labels, Heat Gun,etc.

Printer paper, and all other kinds of paper are easily accessible in the top drawer. I also keep a box with labels and stickers and another one with big tape rolls here.

Green office supply organizer & boxes with other supplies
Middle Drawer - Mail, Banking, Computer Software, Cords, Extra Supplies, etc.

The middle drawer holds extra electronic cords and small accessories, camera items, and a two-tier organizer tray for extra pens, markers,.exacto knives, etc. There is a mail/ bill paying section with items like cheque books, receipt books, envelopes in various sizes, stamps and address labels. Office related software is in this drawer too. Some of the boxes I used were re-purposed from gift baskets, but a few were inexpensive IKEA finds.

Drawer with scrapbook box and notebooks
Bottom Drawer - Scrapbook supplies, Happy Planner hole punch, paper cutter, extra notebooks & planner supplies.

I keep my scrap-booking supplies and extra notebooks, as well as extra planner supplies in the bottom drawer. Behind the scrapbook organizer box, which I purchased at Fabricland many years ago, are a paper cutter and Happy Planner hole punch.

Built-in Cabinet #2...

The second cabinet looks like it has only two drawers but there is a third shallow hidden drawer. This drawer holds my regularly used items where my labeller, hole punch, tape, staplers and extra small office supplies live.

The large “top” drawer, although technically the middle drawer, holds my wireless printer and there is a plug receptacle in the back of the cabinet. The printer is accessible here but out of sight. I also store my laminator, extra laminating sheets and extra printer cartridges here.

file drawer

For those of you that have read my blog about organizing papers you will probably recognize my file drawer. The bottom drawer is my file drawer for current files, but my archive files are stored elsewhere.  My files are colour coded by type first, and then  alphabetically. I also store some extra file folders in the back.

IKEA Office Built-in Adjustable Shelves...

My planners, notebooks, binders, boxes and non-fiction books are kept on the shelves. The books in this section are about organizing, decor or finances. Some photos are kept in the photo boxes. To create visual interest I used some boxes, photos and decor items.

Home Office Setup...

I recently moved my desk close to the cabinets for easy accessibility, and oh, what a difference! I don’t even have to get up to file a paper – although maybe that isn’t such a good thing. My shredder is placed beside the desk and if I want to watch the TV, I can tilt the screen towards me.
