Painting a door is easy – right? Well, that depends on the door. My front door had a large window in it and I think it was a custom made. The plastic frame had got yellow over time and I wanted to spray paint it. The wood parts of the door also had a lot of scratches and gouges. I had painted it turquoise several years ago, but was ready for a change.

Step One Front Door Painting...Prep

Tools & Supplies...

I carefully removed the window frame screws and the window. Initially I tried using an old electric paint stripper – very dangerous. Then I gave it a light sanding. Some spots I had to add a little filler to. Finally, I put painters’ tape around the handle and lock because I am not ready to replace them at this time.

Step Two Door Painting...the window frame & door

The frame got a coat of spray primer first and then two coats of spray enamel in white. For the door paint I used Behr satin primer and paint in one in the colour carbon.

Step Three...Putting the window back in

Putting the window back in ended up being a lot harder than taking it out. Fortunately my hubby was able to borrow the suction cup handles used to install heavy windows. Warning: Don’t try this at home.

Step Four...Touch ups...

Finally, inevitably, I had to do some touch ups. A little more filler, sanding and paint. A few times, until I was finally satisfied, although it’s still not perfect.
