Are you considering making a walkway on a budget? For many years now, I have wanted a walkway from my guest apartment #2 to their driveway. I had the path to #1 repaired last year. It was concrete…and very expensive. All of the quotes I got to add a little curved walkway from #2 were beyond my budget at this time. Making one by hand and using driveway screening was suggested as a much cheaper option.

Starting to make walkway...

To mark where the new path would go I used a string. (It was easier to make the curve.) Then I used inverted marking spray paint to make it clear and removed the string. My son used the three foot long shovel to mark the width as he went along.

Continuing on...

As my son shoveled out the path he moved the sod pieces to the sides of the concrete walkway.

After all the sod was removed, the dirt was smoothed out and tamped down to make a solid base. My son improvised this with a concrete block and a small end of a barn beam.

Adding the weed fabric to the walkway...

Four rolls of weed fabric were used before adding the screening. If you are considering this project, I would advise you to use a better quality weed control fabric. (Unfortunately, the weeds started coming through after only a couple of months.)

The final step...adding the screening...

Finally, the screening was placed on top of the weed fabric. It didn’t get finished the first day, so my son came back to finish up the next day. The screening was about 3″ thick and was also tamped down smooth. It was just starting to rain as my son finished and that helped to solidify the screening. If rain hadn’t been in the forecast we would have sprayed it with the garden hose.

The walkway is finally finished! Eventually I would like to upgrade to a concrete one, but for now it will do.
