Where do you find your recipes? Do you still like to have an extensive cookbook collection or do you just have a few that you actually use? Today you can Google almost any recipe you want, but you may want to keep some old family favourites in print form. I recently learned how easy it is to use a laminator. By laminating the recipe cards I typed out on the computer, they will be protected from any splashes when cooking.

Step One...Select recipes...

First, I had to decide which recipes I wanted to put in the binder. Which recipes would make the cut to be passed down to future generations? I will share some of those in future posts.

Step Two...Type out recipes...

It took a little finagling to figure out the best way to layout the instructions. In the end I decided to try and keep the ingredient list on the front and the directions on the back. By flipping the directions upside down they will appear right side up when flipping the page in the binder.

Step Three...Make recipe cards...

After printing out your recipes, you will need to cut them down to size. I cut mine 17 cm X 9.5 cm, flipped the directions on the back side, lined them up, and put them in the laminator sheet. I was able to put 2 recipes on one sheet, before putting it through the laminator. After turning it on, all I had to do was wait for the green light when it was hot enough, to feed it through.

Trim the excess plastic off the cards with a paper trimmer, being careful to leave a little plastic all around the edge. Line the finished card up center on the hole punch and, voilà, the recipe card is finished.

Step Four...Make dividers...

Using the card stock, measure and cut on paper trimmer the same size as the recipe cards. Cut as many as you need for the different categories.

The categories I used were:

  • Egg Dishes
  • Veg. & Meat Dishes
  • Vegetables
  • Soups
  • Dips & Sauces  and
  • Desserts

I would recommend that you laminate the dividers before punching the holes. (Not the way I did…oops.) I had to punch the holes again and they didn’t line up exactly.

Finally, stick the tabs on the dividers and print out a label for each with the labeller. I used the clear plastic tape so it would also withstand the splashes.
