I came across this idea to make a patio umbrella stand with a large plant pot on You Tube. My backyard gets unbearably hot in the afternoon and my middle patio area really needed some shade. I also didn’t want to spend a fortune on it and wanted to re-use things I already had. Waste not, want not.

  • Spray paint in the colour of your choice.

*Optional supplies:

  • Limestone screening (a few shovelfuls)

  • Potting soil

                 OR

The secret hoarder in me had most of the supplies already on hand. I only had to buy the planter pot and some more flowers. I tried to find a replacement shade for my old umbrella, but I found that most of the ones that fit, cost just as much or more than what I paid for the whole thing originally. Just by chance I happened to find a new grey one at the Great Canadian Superstore. It was the last one and was less than $40 (before taxes)!

I found the planter pot at a discount liquidation store for less than $20. The flowers I got at Canadian Tire were also heavily discounted and for the whole window box display was only $10.
