This year I finally got around to doing a refresh on my back patio for my guest suite #2. Everyone likes to have a nice place to sit and enjoy the sunset. What can you do to make a special outdoor area for yourself? Even small areas can be transformed to make your own special oasis and be budget-friendly.

Back patio refresh basics...Paint and clean...

As you can see in the picture above, the exterior siding was beige and the old concrete was very dirty. Last year I got the little loveseat and coffee table.

Oops!

This year my exterior siding and trim finally got painted and the damaged siding was replaced. The small section of foundation was also parged and painted grey. Unfortunately there was a little accident and paint spilled on the concrete. That turned out to be a good thing though. When I pressure washed it, the dark mildew that had built up over the years, also came off.

Repaired wicker furniture

Back patio budget-friendly furniture & accessories...using what you already have...

Buying new furniture this year wasn’t a priority as I had bought the loveseat and coffee table last year. Unfortunately some of the wicker broke so I did a temporary repair with black duct tape. Now I have my eye out for a good deal on some replacement furniture, but I haven’t found it yet.

I painted an old window box planter, filled it with a few plants and put it on the ledge. One of the LED lanterns I already had, was also put here. The grey patio area rug I had bought a few years ago went here perfectly.

The Back Patio needed shade...

This area really needed some shade as it can get unbearably hot in the afternoons. My original plan was to just replace the fabric shade of the umbrella I already had but then I found this one! It was less than $40 before taxes at a local grocery store. I decided to make a DIY planter umbrella stand which you can read how to make in my previous post.

barbecue

Newest addition to patio...a barbecue!

Some of my guests suggested they would like to barbecue, so I’ve been on the hunt. I found one that looked pretty good at the side of the road and it actually works! The drip pan was badly rusted though so tried to find another one that doesn’t cost as much as a brand new one! In the end I bought two aluminum foil oven liners and taped them together with aluminum tape. I touched up some of the paint and gave it a good cleaning. The new propane tank came from Costco.

Shopping for patio on a budget...must have patience...

Of course I looked in the usual places – Facebook Marketplace, thrift stores, liquidation discount stores and online. I tried to get a few things on an online auction where I have had success in the past, but I was outbid. Because it was so late in the season, I lucked out with some plants at Canadian Tire.
