Well, I finally got my guest suite #2 kitchen reno done. Thanks to the supply delays that IKEA has been experiencing, it has taken three months to complete. (It’s a good thing I don’t have many guests in the winter.)

Guest kitchen
Before - 24" apartment-size fridge, tile countertops & teeny, tiny corner cabinet doors.

Guest kitchen before and why I wanted to change it...

On first look, the original kitchen wasn’t too bad – just a little dated. The countertops had been “temporarily” covered with tiles with the grout that was hard to keep clean. The corner cabinet doors were so narrow only a little person could get in them. And the corners of the cabinet doors by the stove had started to melt. Just before my last guest came in the fall, the fridge died again. It was only three years old and I had found out previously, that the repair costs were prohibitive. Because the cabinets didn’t allow for a regular size fridge – that was just one more strike against them. Oh, and there was no dishwasher🙁.

Guest kitchen reno Phase One...

The old cabinets, countertops and tiles were removed.

Guest kitchen reno Phase Two...

The walls were repaired and new floor tiles were laid. I decided to keep the floor plan the same so I wouldn’t have to move the plumbing pipes. Before we started putting in the cabinets I had an electrician come to run the wire for the new dishwasher.

Guest kitchen reno Phase Three...now the cabinets.

After going to a couple different IKEA stores, a few times, I was able to find all the base cabinets. My son has become an expert at putting the IKEA cabinets together, so he helped with that. The baseboard and door trim were finished after the base cabinets were in place.

Next we waited for countertops and upper cabinets to come in...

The countertops that usually take two weeks took three, so that wasn’t too bad. Right after I ordered them I had a terrible feeling that we hadn’t allowed for the stove door handle but I was able to get the extra 1 1/2 ” added before it had went into production. Whew!

Still waiting for the uppers ...

We still hadn’t got the uppers when the countertop came in, but we proceeded with what we could. The countertops were installed with the new sink and the dishwasher was hooked up. The peninsula was wrapped with bead-board and trim.

The uppers finally came in...

First I found the biggest upper cabinet at my regular IKEA store. Then I found the corner cabinet online at the Ottawa store and ordered it, with a small shipping charge. Finally a few hours after I had ordered it, I got the email from my regular store, that all the missing pieces I had put a reserve on had finally come in. Ugh!

Upper cabinets
Upper cabinets installed.

I didn’t get a new stove or hood vent because they still worked fine and the stove was only a few years old. However I did thoroughly clean the vent hood and the filter. When all the upper cabinets were installed I primed the walls and painted. Fortunately I still had some leftover paint that matched so I didn’t have to do the whole room.

Backsplash tile done, door knobs put on and new fridge.

Final phase..backsplash tile and finishing touches...

The backsplash just finished the kitchen reno off nicely. The cabinet knobs and pulls were put on and a broken switch cover replaced. One of the pocket lights had to be removed because it stopped one of the cabinet doors from opening. Finally I put a floating shelf above the new fridge. I originally planned on two shelves with a totally different look, but when I couldn’t find what I wanted I thought this would do.
