Kitchen renovations can be very expensive. My IKEA kitchen makeover is now approximately ninety per cent complete! It is definitely an exercise in patience, taking three years to get to this point, but I think I can live with it now until I’m ready to finish it.

The lower cabinets are all installed, the dishwasher was moved and the water line has finally been hooked up to the fridge.  Eventually, the floor, kickboards and peninsula trim, will also get finished.

Stage Three of my IKEA Kitchen Makeover...demo of lower cabinets...

My son and hubby demolished the old base cabinets. My son also put the IKEA cabinets together. The original cabinets from the 1960’s were custom-built with plywood and therefore, not adjustable and therefore not practical. The corner section was a deep dark hole that was hard to find anything in, and some of the drawers were useless. We tried to save the floor tiles but unfortunately a few got broken so they will have to be changed.😞

Stage Three of my IKEA Kitchen Makeover...changes with new cabinets, etc....

The dishwasher was moved to the peninsula and the plumbing was rerouted. A fridge waterline was also fed through the floor rafters to the trap door I had made behind the fridge. I added two corner cabinets with turntables to make items more accessible…so no more lost things in dark places. There were lots of extra drawers added too. IKEA has great organization accessories that are made specifically to fit the Sektion cabinets. The cost savings come in when you assemble the cabinets yourself. For the cabinet doors and drawer-fronts, there is a range in price and quality and, of course I chose the most expensive BODBYN doors, .

IKEA kitchen farm sink

A new farm-style sink was installed with a black faucet with pullout nozzle. Mosaic strip tiles with stainless steel, glass and marble-looking ceramic tiles were also installed. These were from a line called “Troy” from Rona. The stove hood was carefully removed so the tile could go to the ceiling and then it was re-installed. On either side of the stove, filler pieces were added and await some paint.

For the final stage in the kitchen makeover I will replace all the floors on the main level with the same hardwood. Finally the toe kicks can go on and the peninsula wall will be finished off.
