For over six years I have been biding my time, waiting to redo my laundry room. Other priorities always took precedence. This year I decided it would finally be the year I would tackle it. I actually did this at the start of the year so I apologize for waiting so long to share it with you.

For the past couple of years I plotted and planned, buying a barn door and a chandelier I liked when they were on sale. By taking my time, I was also able to change my mind about a few things – namely the pass-through on the back wall and the paint colour.

Laundry Room Makeover Step One Prep... Removing drop ceiling, lights, shelves and door...

The fluorescent lightbulbs had started to burn out and only one was working – sometimes. Half the time it would flicker like disco lights – for those of you that remember what they were like. The door and door frame were removed, as well as the old wall shelves and tile “backsplash”. I had an electrician come and move the switch back to the other side of the doorway and clean up all the wires from the fluorescent lights. A temporary lightbulb was put in the center of the ceiling. Finally, in preparation for the drywall mess, plastic was put up in the hallways.

Laundry Room Makeover Step Two... Fix drywall and paint...

The pass-through in the back wall had to be filled in. It’s only purpose was to let in natural light but I finally decided I would rather have the wall space to hang up the ironing board. The door frame had new drywall to finish it off. All the other imperfections were also patched and the ceiling and walls were primed. Finally the walls were painted in Greek Villa, a very pale aqua colour that I have used before and the teal around the door in hallway was touched up. The new chandelier was also installed.

Step Three... DIYs...Stain barn door, etc.

I found a great deal on a barn door kit a couple of years ago ($200). I stained it with Varathane Stain and Polyurethane in Mission Oak. My sewing machine case had also become very yellow over time so I painted it with white spray paint. Wall shelves from IKEA that I have had for years, were repurposed here.

Finally...hang barn door...

The last thing to do was to hang the new barn door. This took a few attempts as the studs didn’t line up with the holes in the mounting bar and I had to get new holes drilled in the bar where they needed to be.

The moral of the story is that you need to get creative when things don’t work out the way you want them too.

Plans for Phase Two...

I am ecstatic to have phase one done for my laundry room. Going forward – maybe next year, I would like to make a few more changes. Number One on my wish list is a new laundry sink cabinet and gooseneck faucet. Number Two would be a new countertop on the cabinet to match the sewing “desk”. I am debating about the cabinets though. Should I just add shaker trim and change the handles? Or should I get new cabinets? The beige tiles on the floor aren’t really the aesthetic I am going for so I may change them or attempt painting them.
