Recently, I decided to turn my basement apartments into guest suites. (I’ve always loved an excuse to decorate.) During my travels I stayed at some accommodations on Airbnb and I was impressed at how easy it was to use the site. They handle all the payments in a safe, secure manner, submit the taxes where applicable, and then pay the host – minus their fees.

I tried to not spend any money to set it up, but alas – that was not to be. Most of the furniture and accessories I already had. A few new purchases were required – a new bed, mattress, air conditioner, a few pictures, sheets, pillows, mattress and pillow protectors. Plus a few consumable supplies.

The transformation begins for Guest Suite #1...

My previous tenants had painted the entrance/dining area in my favourite aqua colour, so I left that. Happily, I was able to bring my old table and ladder-back chairs out of storage. The cushion covers were already in the right colours – a blue and green plaid pattern. Years ago I made them with Velcro fastenings so I could easily remove them to wash. The table just needed a fresh coat of paint. My previous tenant had given me the secretary desk a year before and I was finally able to use it.

The living room and kitchen area, originally a green and yellow, was painted in two tones of grey – darker on the bottom, lighter on the top portion.  A pullout bed is in the navy velvet sofa. I put the white desk and chair in here temporarily with the TV. It will have to be moved when the weather gets colder and I want to turn the gas fireplace on.

The little bathroom with the toilet, vanity and sink were painted with some leftover pale aqua paint. I brought in an over-the-toilet cabinet and put some baskets in the vanity to hold extra towels, toilet paper and a hair dryer.

All I had to do in the shower room was decorate and add needed items – shower curtain, bath mat, towels, shampoo, etc.

The walls were painted a light grey with an accent wall in a light aqua. I put local and other history books on the shelves and a full length mirror in the alcove. The inside of the closet was also painted and I added a few velvet hangers, cubby storage and extra blankets.
