Fantasy Life Versus Our Reality

I don’t know about you, but I think most people have a fantasy life – that is – a totally different perception of what their life is really like. I’m not talking about fantasies of winning the lottery or any daydreams about things you would like to do. I’m talking about all those  projects and trips and things you think you are going to do. Ahem.. are you really going to do them?

In my fantasy life I have all the time, energy and money to accomplish all the projects I want to do...

This year alone I have three or four major projects that I want to do for my home and other properties. The third phase in my kitchen reno (installing new lower cabinets) I was hoping to get done this month. It might get half done but chances are it will drag on for a couple of months. Next month my mother is going to be moving into my basement apartment so I need to put in a shower for her and finish getting it ready. That’s a #1 priority so I have to make it happen.

I have at least a dozen other “smaller” projects on my list. (Redoing the back deck, staining the front porch, repainting the garage floor…the list goes on.)True…I will not be doing everything myself. I will be hiring the appropriate people to do the things I can’t do myself (like the plumbing and the electrical and the countertop.)

That brings me to the money equation. In order to pay for all those projects…I have to go to work…but then I don’t have the time or energy left to do anything.

My fantasy life also involves getting back into shape and creating a more healthy lifestyle...

  1. Eating nutritious home grown food from my own garden. (Yeah right…I don’t even have a garden.) Every year I think I’m going to at least do some container gardening on my back deck. The couple of times I had a few plants though, they didn’t do so well… who knew they had to be watered EVERY day???
  2. Walking or pursuing other physical leisure activities like going swimming at the beach in summer, bike riding, dancing, skating and skiing in the winter. At the very least, working out three times a week. Ha ha ha… I went skating once this winter… I didn’t even get to the beach or go bike riding once last year.
  3. Getting enough sleep… hard to do when you work 12 and 16 hour shifts (days, nights and afternoons).

Another fantasy I had is that I am a frequent hostess...

When I bought my house a few years ago, I envisioned having the special family dinners at my long dining table, backyard barbecues and some friends over for dinners…So far, it’s worked out to about once or twice a year.

Part of my fantasy life used to be true...

Many years ago I caught the travelling bug and went to quite a few different foreign places. I haven’t left the country now for a few years. Any travelling I have done has been right here in Canada and not for any extended period of time. There are places I still want to go and someday I will… when my budget, schedule and other obligations allow.

A very common fantasy that I think a lot of people have is that they are going to de-clutter and get completely organized and never have to do it again...

There are very few people that have every inch of there homes and lives organized. (I honestly haven’t met one yet.) Most of us who consider ourselves to be fairly organized, are always tweaking some area or system.

It is a process more than a destination.  Life is all about change. New things are always coming into our lives and some are going out.  (The mess in the basement isn’t going out by itself though.)

My reality and maybe yours too?

It’s a vicious cycle. We need to work to provide for our family and our future. There are only so many hours in a day and we have to sleep for at least a third of it.  We must prioritize what we need to do and maybe let go of some of those not so important things.

I am very grateful for what I have. I know what I have to do to make my reality be more in line with my fantasy life and I have a plan.

What is your fantasy life?
