In 2014 when I moved into my home, I had a vision for the fireplace wall.  Last winter the fan in my older style gas fireplace went kaput. Yes, I could have paid $500 to have it fixed, but I had been planning to buy a new fireplace insert this year anyway. And $500 is a big chunk of money to basically throw away for something temporary.

In 2014 the fireplace wall was painted in two tones of beige and tan. A small shelf with a picture was hung over the fireplace. The original built-in on the right was plain black with a single wood handle in the center of each drawer. A television stand held the TV on the other side and the hearth surround was oak.

By 2017 the walls were painted zeppelin grey. A long shelf made a “mantle” over the fireplace and the TV was hung over it. I had added a built-in on one side to balance the one on the other, and added trim and painted them white. I also replaced the single wood handles on the drawers to two half moon shaped handles.

This summer I finally got a new fireplace, installed by Peutz and Sons from The Woodworks in Midland. I really like the screen on the fireplace to protect little fingers. The tilwork and installation of the barn beam mantle were done by local tradesman, Richard Hackett. (I actually sanded and stained the barn beam myself after my hubby squared off the ends.)

The original stone fireplace behind the drywall was not in the best condition, with broken or missing mortar at the sides. There was also a lot of wood framework that had to be removed, and metal frame bars and cement board added for heat resistance.  To allow the new fireplace to fit in properly it had to be reset back to the original stone wall so we made a tile surround inset with the same grey tiles that were put on the hearth. The mantle was installed using re-bar rods.

Initially I was just going to have the stone tile on the front face of the wall with white trim on either side. However, I am really liking the stone wrapped around the sides, despite the extra work and cost.

Fireplace wall insert for plugs and TV mount

The insert made over the mantle for the TV mount,  plugs and cables for the TV and DVD player was painted white. No more dangling wires or cords and the TV doesn’t have to stick out so far, unless it’s angled.

Finally, my vision for the fireplace wall is complete.
