With spring cleaning upon us I decided to tackle the much neglected linen closet to finally do a refresh on. Since I bought my house a few years ago, other than organizing it’s much varied contents, I have done absolutely nothing to it. Here are some basic tips to help you organize and give your linen closet a fresh new look:

1) The first step for organizing the linen closet is to ASSESS THE SITUATION and MAKE A PLAN.

I knew I wanted to change the mismatched shelf liners. I also knew that I wanted to paint the walls and ceiling to brighten it up. Over the last year I have also acquired a few pretty bins that I originally planned on using in my master closet, but then changed my mind. To keep it budget friendly I used some left over paint that my mom had given me , and re-purposed some baskets I had been using elsewhere.

2) REMOVE EVERYTHING from the linen closet, and I mean everything.

I removed all the linens, first aid kit and toiletry items. Because I was planning on painting and recovering the shelves, I took those out too. The previous owner had put some pieces of pegboard in it which I also removed. (Hopefully, I will find a use for those elsewhere.)

3) The next step is to PURGE as much as possible, keeping only what you really love and need.

If your closet is like mine, there are extra items that don’t necessarily belong in there. Now is the time to reallocate them if possible. I moved some of my extra linens that I was saving for another place to “deep” storage and my extra skin care and nail care items to the bathroom. A few of my overflow items had to remain though. I also found a few items that were good enough to donate.

4) Next comes the hard work…IMPLEMENTING THE PLAN

.

I recovered the shelves with a grey and white patterned contact liner and painted the walls and ceiling with Beautitone Paint’s Roman White which is actually a pale aqua colour.(I am not sponsored by Beautitone.) Of course, the floor also needed to be cleaned when I was done.

5) When REORGANIZING items to put back in, you need to keep in mind to:

  • Place most used items so they are easily accessible and do not put heavy items up high, unless you happen to be very tall or very strong.
  • Fold towels and linens neatly and place on the shelves at an accessible level to those that will be getting them. (There are some great videos instructing how to fold a fitted sheet.)
  • Smaller items can be corralled in baskets or bins.
I am very fortunate to have a large linen closet, but even if you don’t, the same principles apply. if you found this post to be helpful or if you have any tips please drop me a line.
