My master bedroom finally got a mini- reno this past winter. The drywall valance was finally removed and the “popcorn” ceiling is now history. I also painted over the original tan colour on the walls in a dark grey and white. Read more for a few tips if you are considering doing a mini-reno yourself.

Let the Master Bedroom Mini-reno begin and Tip#1...Update.

A drywall valance spanned the east side wall of the room. It also was the last room that still had the “popcorn ” stucco ceiling. The drywall valance was a popular architectural feature in the sixties and seventies. Tip #1 To update a room and visually make it appear larger, remove the drywall valance. Removing “popcorn” stucco from the ceiling will also update a room.

My hubby and my youngest son removed the drywall valance very carefully. My son removed the curtain rods first.

Master Bedroom Mini-reno continues and Tip#2...Enlist help.

Tip#2…Know your limits. Enlist the right people to help you if you do not have the time or skill required. I hired a contractor to fix all the drywall and remove the “popcorn” ceiling.  He also primed the ceiling and another of my sons helped paint it. Painting ceilings are the worst! (I had a sore neck for months the last time I did it.) Doing drywall is also “not my thing” and I didn’t want to bother my hubby to do it. (Aka. ” I wanted it done this century.”)

Master Bedroom Mini-reno - Let the painting begin and Tip #3...Use the right supplies and the best quality you can afford.

I decided to paint two walls white and two walls dark grey. I also refreshed the white trim and door paint. Green painter’s tape became my best friend. A professional painter once told me that you should never skimp on cheap paint for the trim and doors that will need to stand up to use and abuse. If you really need a cheaper alternative for the walls, most eggshell paints are acceptable. I prefer the wall paints that have a primer and paint in one. Of course, they are more expensive, but not when they go on sale. If you are painting on new drywall, make sure to use a primer first.

Tip #4 - Painting...It's all in the prep work...

Sometimes it seems to take longer to do the prep work, but do not skimp on this step if you want a good result. Take the time to tape off edges if you do not have a steady hand. Make sure holes are patched and primed.

Tip #5...Have a budget and a plan...

Replacing the flooring will have  to wait. At this point I’m not ready to go all out and get that done too. I want to do all the flooring the same in the hall and the other bedroom so I will need to save more money first.
