Are you looking for a fun way to declutter and simplify your life? This can be done for a week or two, a month or whatever time frame you decide. The original minimalism game is for thirty days, created by The Minimalists – Joshua Fields Milburne and Ryan Nicodemus of The Minimalists.

I recently decided to try it!

The Rules of the Minimalism Game...

The rules are simple.

Game Rule #1...

Start by decluttering or discarding one thing on day one: two things on day two: three items on day three and so on. After thirty days, by following this simple direction you will have got rid of 454 items. (485 if done for 31 days.)

Recycling trash

Game Rule #2...

Obvious garbage or recycling like food wrappers or scraps and junk mail doesn’t count. Things that you would normally consume and/or dispose of on a daily or weekly basis, doesn’t count.

Large furniture

Some Tips for the Minimalism Game...

Start with bigger items. ie. a piece of furniture or a service. I started by cancelling my cable TV when I did it the first time. (I didn’t make it all the way through the month, so I’m doing it again.)

Designate an area to put items that you are going to discard. I am lucky, or maybe, not so lucky that I have a big garage to store things in.

Make a plan and arrange to sell, donate or dispose of the items as soon as possible. I realize that right now with the pandemic, it is difficult to  donate things. That is why I suggest designating an area to temporarily hold them. Fortunately, most dumps are open for actual garbage or recyclable items. Maybe you have family or friends that want some of your discards. Do not burden them with your stuff if they are already drowning in their own clutter.

Try to recycle, refurbish or reuse as much as possible if it isn’t good enough to donate. ie. Old clothes with holes may be turned into rags for painting clean ups.

Recycle note

Here are some of the things I have decided to discard...

I admit I have a lot more junk than most people. Unfortunately, I have “inherited” a lot from my sons, my grandkids, tenants and my mother. And then I have my own stuff, left over reno materials and items accumulated over the years to contend with.
