After doing his sister’s room, my grandson was eager to get his room refreshed before going back to school. His room was twice the size, but he had some massive furniture and a MASSIVE Lego collection. To say it was a little overwhelming was an understatement. After scratching my head about what to do, where to start, we finally came up with a plan.

Why do kids' rooms usually end up a cluttered mess?...

There are so many things that contribute to a cluttered mess in kids rooms but they all boil down to three things.

  1. There are multiple purposes for the space. Sleeping and getting dressed,  storage of toys, crafts, books, schoolwork, etc. and space to do those things.
  2. Too many things can be overwhelming and frustrating. Having too many clothes shoved in a closet make it a struggle to get anything in or out. The result being an untidy mess on the floor. Whatever quantity of clothes, toys, etc. have to fit the space they are in comfortably.
  3. Systems and habits to maintain the space are missing.  Children are totally capable of learning to do simple things that will become healthy habits. Having a laundry hamper in the room to put dirty clothes in right away, a rule to put toys away as soon as they are finished being played with, or just making the bed every day can go a long way to keeping a small space tidy.

Clearing out the boy's room...

The first thing that had to go was the massive dresser, so we carefully cleared out all the Lego stored there. My grandson did an awesome job of decluttering some of his toys and Lego creations and kept only his favorites. But he still had a lot. His mother had already gone through his clothes with him and got matching hangers.

Next, came cleaning and rearranging...

With the excess furniture and toys out of the room, there was space to rearrange things and thoroughly clean everything. The bed was turned around, but the wall shelves and TV  were left in place. Unfortunately, there had been an accident with some pop being spilled on the mattress and it didn’t look so good.😞I came to the rescue with my Hoover® Power Scrub Deluxe Pet Carpet & Upholstery Deep Cleaner and now it looks brand new. All the shelves, furniture, floor and window were also cleaned.

New (old) storage solutions for boy's room...

Zayne’s toy box in the playroom was brought back to his room. He had no problem letting go of toys he no longer played with, so some of his smaller Lego creations and a few other toys went in here.  These wooden stacking bins hold a few of his other toys that he uses regularly and needs easy access to.

Decorating ideas for a boy's room...

As you can tell from Zayne’s choice of paint colour, he likes bright colours. Most kids like to see their things, so using a curated collection of Zayne’s favorite Lego was a must. Not only were Lego on three shelves, but also on the small table made by his great grandfather. The globe was a gift from his grandfather who lives in the States. For wall art we used a ceramic turtle that Zayne had made and a bright picture painted by a friend of my mum’s. We also hung some signs and Lego “art”.

More essentials...

Two things that I think are essential in every kids’ room are a laundry hamper and a waste basket. With those two things in place it is so much easier for a kid to keep their room clean.
