After completing stage three of my IKEA kitchen renovation, I was finally able to get everything put away and organized! Here are my top ten IKEA kitchen organization tips to help you organize your kitchen.
I had already went through all the kitchen paraphernalia I had and purged what I thought I didn’t use, wouldn’t use and didn’t love. (It was a great excuse to buy some new things to replace things that had seen better days and that I didn’t love anymore.)
Solve a problem or two with your kitchen organization...
In all re-organizing projects I try to solve a “problem” or tweak an area that I don’t think is really working for me. When life gets busy, clutter tends to build up in “problem” areas.
IKEA kitchen organization Tip #1is to give everything a home...
Everything needs to have a home, and it’s home needs to be in the right place so it is easily accessible when and where it is needed.
IKEA kitchen organization Tip #2 Organize in zones...
You may have several zones in your kitchen based on your individual needs, and even zones within zones.
Some common zones in the kitchen are based on what you are doing:
- Cooking
- Baking
- Eating
- Drinking
- Cleaning
- Dish washing
- Making lunches to go
Or on what it is:
- Food
- Food Storage Containers
- Eating Wares- plates, bowls, etc.
- Drinking Wares – glasses, cups, etc.
- Cutlery and Utensils
- Small Appliances
- Entertainment Wares
- Kids’ Stuff
You may have other specialized zones if there is something you particularly like to do in your kitchen. Maybe you love having a taco night, a fondue night or are into juicing or making smoothies. It might make your life easier to have all the accouterments for those things together in one place.
Tip #3 Use bins, baskets or other containers to corral smaller items...
Minimize clutter (& mess) by containing smaller items and be able to access them easily. By keeping the toaster in it’s own bin, and the coffee scoop in a little bowl, the cabinets are kept clean from crumbs and coffee grounds.
Tip #4 Utilize vertical space...
Tip #5 Display your special items...
You may have a treasured heirloom, a gift from someone or something you purchased that holds a special memory for you. If they are worth holding onto, even if you hardly ever or never use it, it deserves a place of honor where you can see it and enjoy it.
Tip#6 Use trays for deep shelves...
It can be hard to reach items at the back of deep shelves. I have found that using a tray to put like items on really helps me to access those things. When I have a lot of people over, and don’t feel like having a lot of dishes to wash, I can pull down the tray that has all the paper plates and disposable items very easily.
Tip#7 Use a wine rack to hold water bottles...
I thought this was a great hack on got from Abby Organizes.
IKEA kitchen organizationTip#8 Pull out organizers make it easy to access items in deep cabinets...
I only keep the cleaning items I need in the kitchen, in the kitchen.
Tip#9 Store rarely used items above fridge...
I call this area deep storage because it is not easily accessible, unless you happen to be six and a half feet tall. Vertical space has also been utilized by adding a half – depth shelf.
IKEA kitchen organization Tip#10 Specifically for IKEA drawers..
When organizing cutlery or utensils in IKEA drawers, it is best to use the IKEA cutlery organizers. I have a few different sizes in the bamboo, including a knife rack, but they also have some white plastic ones that are much cheaper. The edges are angled to fit the drawers perfectly. The ones I had in my old drawers were straight at the sides and did not fit so well.
