With back to school just around the corner, I thought it would be a great time to help decorate and organize my grandchildren’s rooms. We started with my granddaughter’s tiny room which had already been painted in her favorite pink and purple. Organizing and decorating small spaces can be particularly challenging.
Where do you start in a tiny girl's room?...Declutter!
Like all good organizing and decorating projects, you should start with decluttering. Depending on the age of the child, you might have to do this for them, but it is important to get their input on their favorite things. Being the parent you may have to veto keeping some things that are obviously broken, no longer useful, or that take too much space, even if they want to keep them.
My daughter-in-law went through all the clothes and did a great job decluttering a garbage bag full of good clothes to pass on to someone else. Even my granddaughter, who is seven, got into the spirit and let some toys go. It was apparent to me that there was too much furniture in the tiny space and the layout was very awkward. An ottoman that had been put in there, when decluttering another room, has found a new home with me. (I actually needed an ottoman, so that worked out well.)
Alternative storage solutions for tiny kids rooms...
If you have a storage space, you could have a temporary holding bin for toys or books to rotate when they get bored with their most current items. Last year I helped to turn the sunroom into a play room and the majority of the kids toys were kept there.
Keep sentimental items in a memory box on a closet shelf or other out of the way storage. Favorite stuffed animals, baby clothes, ultrasound pictures, etc. should not be kept with current use items.
Organizing and decorating tips for tiny rooms...
What absolutely needs to stay in the room? Sometimes your options for furniture placement in a small space are limited. What problems do you need to solve? Unfortunately, for my granddaughter’s room, the modem for the Wi-Fi had to be located here, which left unsightly cords to work around. We were able to move the modem to the shelf below the TV and taped the cord to the baseboard so it was out of the way. The rolling cart with a few of the stuffed toys also helped to hide the cords under the TV, although I’d like to get something to hide them better.
More Organizing and decorating tips for tiny rooms...
- Eliminate unnecessary furniture and other items.
- Play around with the layout to see what works best.
- Is there anything you can repurpose that you already have?
- Do you need to purchase anything? My granddaughter had a little accident with one of her crafts and got paint all over her curtains and comforter. (She won’t be doing any more messy crafts in her room – I hope.) I bought her curtains at Giant Tiger.
- Do you need to fix anything? When trying to organize a little shelf, her “K” fell off and broke the lampshade but fortunately my son was able to fix it.
Next...Clean...
As we went around the room to see what needed to be decluttered or re-organized, we also cleaned the space. The furniture and accessories were wiped down, the floor vacuumed and mopped and the window was washed. All the bedding and laundry were washed too and little items were dusted.
Save space in tiny rooms...
Eliminate any furniture or large items not essential to the room. The stool was replaced with a small ottoman that can fit under the dressing table. The pails were also tucked under there and can be used as a waste basket. Multi-function pieces are ideal in such tiny spaces. In the future, a bed with drawers or other storage might be a solution as she grows. Take advantage of vertical space and avoid taking up floor space.
Use toys and other items as decor...
Initially the little stuffed animals were put in a bag, but I found another narrow white shelf to put over the bed. On the other little shelf some of my granddaughter’s ceramic crafts fit perfectly. I also found the sconces in a bin I was putting in a yard sale and thought they would be perfect to display a couple of her really cute purses. (She’s a little diva.)
A week after the initial declutter, I was very impressed that my granddaughter had kept her room tidy. Of course a few things had been moved as she played with them, and she found a new rock. All her dirty clothes were put in her hamper though, and there were no major messes.😊
